Scholarship honours NS trailblazer Daurene Lewis

A student award is celebrating the rich legacy left by the late Dr. Daurene Lewis a Nova Scotian community advocate, businesswoman, politician, educator and past Principal of NSCC's Institute of Technology (IT) and Akerley Campuses.

The Dr. Daurene Lewis Memorial Award is valued at $1,000 and supports African Canadian students in programs within the School of Health and Human Services including nursing, continuing care, social services and cosmetology.

"Daurene was a remarkable leader with a passion for education and an unwavering devotion to community," says Don Bureaux, NSCC President. "Through this award, we honour the positive impact she had on NSCC particularly the evolution of the College and the growth of our two largest campuses while paying tribute to the trails she blazed across Canada as an African Nova Scotia, a woman and a humanitarian."

The award has was established by the friends and family of Dr. Lewis through the NSCC Foundation.

"I believe it's important to remember the contributions made by Daurene for all Canadians," says Michael Tynes, a family member of the late Dr. Lewis. "She worked to advance improvements for women, visible minorities and many other disadvantaged people. As the first black female mayor elected in Canada, she used her profile to promote her birthplace Annapolis Royal and all of Nova Scotia. She was also an activist in health care, politics and education."
