NOVA SCOTIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Folk family donates $1 million in memorial student award

November 26, 2021

The Folk family is contributing $1 million through NSCC Foundation for a student award dedicated to the memory of Adam Folk.

The Adam Folk Memorial endowment will fund scholarships for students enrolled in the Plumbing program at NSCC. Initially, there will be two $2500 awards presented to students who embody Adam's dedication and commitment to community. The number of annual awards will increase in future years, with recipients chosen based on academic standing and financial need.

About Adam Folk

The Folk family says Adam was a big believer in two things - hard work and family. He began as an apprentice in the fields of plumbing and heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), excelled in his work, and eventually rose to become a part owner of a major Canadian company. He credited his mentor, Art Simpkins, for giving him the support and opportunities which helped lead to his success, he was made an Honorary Life Member (PDF, 52KB) of the Construction Association of Nova Scotia in 1996. Adam believed that support - with mentors offering a transfer of knowledge and helping opening doors to opportunities - is a vital component in the success of those just starting in their profession. The family honoured and added to his beliefs and his legacy by offering enduring financial support for students to help them realize their dreams.

"Our family wants this investment to serve as an encouragement for someone looking to pursue an education in plumbing but who might need a hand up to allow them to chase their dream," says Marcia Folk.

"We hope this award will also encourage those underrepresented in the field to see trades as a pathway for their future, allowing them to support their families and help give back to their communities," adds Folk.

NSCC President Don Bureaux expressed his heartfelt thanks for the Folk family's incredible generosity and wonderful memorial to Adam. "This endowment is an incredible gift. The impact it will have on individuals, their families and their communities is immeasurable. It will help students studying with the College as early as the spring of 2022 and then, for years to come."

He adds, "At NSCC, we see the life-changing impact that awards have on our students who often note that, beyond financial support, awards are a source of motivation as they pursue their goals. On behalf of the future award recipients who will succeed thanks to the Adam Folk Memorial Scholarship, I offer the College's gratitude."
