Professor of Educational Studies Dolana Mogadime believes everyone is gifted with a purpose in their lives.
Motivated by the same search for meaning in her academic work, she has found purpose in making a difference in the lives of others through actions focused on equity and social justice.
Mogadime was recently recognized by the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) for her meaningful contributions to advancing equity and social justice initiatives on campus and beyond.
Mogadime received the Equity and Social Justice Committee Award as part of the OCUFA 2023-24 Awards of Distinction announced June 18, which honour individuals who have achieved excellence in academia in Canadian post-secondary education.
The award recognizes contributions to the advancement of professors and academic staff who belong to historically marginalized groups.
Mogadime said the recognition allows her the opportunity to speak about those whose shoulders she has stood on, and who have inspired her.
"They are the true stalwarts in the Canadian educational landscape such as the late Dr. Patrick Solomon from York University, and Dr. Avis Glaze and Dr. George Sefa Dei from the University of Toronto," she said. "I have also collaborated with many Brock colleagues, students and staff over the years. It takes many people in partnership to advance equity and social justice."
As Faculty Chair of Brock's President's Advisory Committee for Human Rights, Equity and Decolonization (PACHRED), Mogadime and other PACHRED members advise the President and share information across campus to collaborate on common goals of community members to address opportunities and concerns associated with human rights, equity or decolonization.
"It is critical for us to report back to the University and community on how our work is being impactful," she said. "As PACHRED Faculty Chair, it was wonderful to oversee the annual reports and make the issues we raised visible for Brock."
