Third year Nursing student Breanna Dover (Sudbury, ON).

As a mature student, Breanna chose nursing as a career, and she credits Laurentian for providing the ideal setting to pursue her passion. "My experience at Laurentian University has been incredibly positive," she said. "I've felt supported by the wide range of resources available, especially the financial assistance through bursaries and the welcoming, well-equipped library space that has become my favourite study spot."

Breanna chose Laurentian's Nursing program specifically for its strong reputation and community-focused care, particularly valuing the chance to apply skills in a healthcare setting as early as the first semester. Her most memorable moments include hands-on clinical experiences and forming strong connections with fellow students who share a passion for helping others.

This dedication to local healthcare is being amplified by the recently expanded Ontario Learn and Stay Grant. A recipient of the grant, Breanna explained how this support is a critical enabler of her journey. "The grant offers a wonderful opportunity to nursing students by covering books, tuition and other educational costs for those who commit to working in underserved areas like Northern Ontario," she noted. "By reducing financial barriers and encouraging the retention of skilled nurses, I think the grant has great potential to have a meaningful and lasting impact for students and the healthcare system in the North."

Dr. Christina McMillan Boyles, Associate Professor and Director of the University's School of Nursing / Écoles des sciences infirmières praised Breanna's commitment. "We are incredibly proud of our students who demonstrate a commitment to serving the Northern Ontario community. Breanna's dedication is a perfect example of the type of passion we foster in our program. The Ontario Learn and Stay Grant is a powerful tool that helps make this commitment a reality, supporting students who are ready to make a real difference right here in our region."

"Our government is proud to support students like Breanna through the Ontario Learn and Stay Grant," said Nolan Quinn, Minister of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security. "This program ensures financial barriers do not keep passionate, dedicated students from pursuing a world-class education, while also bringing highly skilled health care workers to communities that need them most."

With a clear vision for the future, Breanna encourages others to follow a similar path. "Future students considering nursing programs at Laurentian University should go for it! It's a challenging but incredibly rewarding path and the support systems at Laurentian make the journey manageable and fulfilling."

The story of Breanna Dover is a testament to the powerful combination of individual drive and community support. It showcases the importance of fostering a community of care dedicated to the well-being of Northern Ontario.
