Investing in success: Merivale stock market day builds financial literacy

March 13, 2026

At Merivale High School, the sound of the opening bell recently kicked off a high-stakes race for financial literacy. A grade-wide, multi-week numeracy project culminated in a stock market simulation, turning grade 8 students into savvy stock brokers.

From ledgers to logos

To prepare for this hands-on experience, students explored the fundamentals of financial management. Participants learned practical skills in budgeting and maintaining daily "cash flow logs." Working in groups, the students established their own brokerage houses, complete with logos, signage, business cards, and costumes. These exercises in financial literacy and entrepreneurship set the stage for the highly anticipated stock market event on February 19th.

Strategy under pressure

During the simulation, ten fast-paced rounds represented a full fiscal year. Students were challenged to interpret breaking market headlines and decide whether to buy, sell, or hold. They combined math skills with critical thinking graphing trends, analyzing data, and calculating stock performance to stay ahead of the curve. Teams negotiated with one another as they vied for "Merivale Money" prizes, which celebrated not only portfolio growth, but also categories like office organization and outstanding costumes.

Investing in community

By mixing students from different classes, the initiative fostered a sense of grade-wide unity. It provided an engaging environment to practice the vital communication skills required in today's workforce. As students returned to their regular schedules with sharpened math skills and newfound confidence, it was clear that Merivale's investment in experiential learning is truly paying off.
