Algonquin College students took their place on the world stage on Oct. 22, 2026, as the College became the only Canadian post-secondary institution to participate in On Air 2026, the world's largest student broadcast event.
A team of Broadcasting - Television and Streaming Video students planned, produced and delivered one hour of live programming as part of the 24-hour international telecast, joining student broadcasters from more than a dozen countries. Students took on key production roles including hosts, directors, camera operators, lighting technicians and production crew members, gaining hands-on experience creating professional-quality live television for a global audience.
"This opportunity allowed our students to demonstrate their creativity, professionalism and technical expertise on an international stage," said Heather Ryall, dean, School of Creative and Interdisciplinary Studies, Algonquin College. "We are proud to be the only Canadian institution represented in On Air 2026 and to provide learning experiences that mirror the realities of the broadcasting industry."
The Algonquin College segment highlighted Indigenous culture and heritage connected to the College, provided viewers with a behind-the-scenes look at a live production class and showcased creative work produced by students in the Animation and Film programs.
On Air 2026 brought together student broadcasters from Australia, Brazil, England, France, India, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Turkey, the United States and other countries for the continuous 24-hour broadcast. The event provided learners with a unique opportunity to develop industry-relevant skills while collaborating as part of a global production.
Participation in the event reflects Algonquin College's commitment to providing experiential learning opportunities that prepare students for careers in the rapidly evolving media and broadcasting industries. Special thanks to the Hub350 Digital Media Lab and partner Ross Video for hosting the students in the space during the event.
(Note: for the 2027 academic year, the name of the Broadcasting - Television and Streaming Video program is changing to Media Production.)
