UNIVERSITY OF PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND
Atlantic Veterinary College welcomes first Artist-in-Residence

November 19, 2024

The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) at the University of Prince Edward Island is pleased to welcome its first-ever artist-in-residence, Christopher Griffin. Known for his innovative and captivating works, Griffin will bring a creative spark to the College through this inaugural program.

From now until April 2025, Griffin will work on his art in the annex area of the AVC where students, faculty, staff, and visitors are invited to stop by, watch his creative process unfold, and engage with him about his work.

"This initiative is an exciting opportunity to blend science and art, fostering a dynamic and inspiring environment at the College," said Dr. Dominique Griffon, dean of the AVC. "We're delighted to have Christopher join us as we explore the intersections of creativity and education."

Griffin is a well-known artist across North America and recently moved from Ottawa to Charlottetown, PEI, where he has opened a studio. Griffin's art draws inspiration from nature and the animal world; his works can be seen in outdoor spaces in the nation's capital and in public and private buildings across the continent. He also gives back to the communities he calls home. In 2023, he raised $8,000 for the Ottawa and PEI food banks.

At the AVC, his first piece of artistic magic was to transform a student area, affectionately called the Polar Bear Lounge, by creating an impressive mural of polar bears using his unique techniques of grinding and painting.

The artist-in-residence program represents a unique addition to the AVC community, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the arts in enriching educational spaces. Details on how to apply to become an artist-in-residence will be available in early 2025.
