PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND
20 Island students begin medical training in PEI

August 26, 2025

August 25 marks a significant milestone for health care in Prince Edward Island as 20 Island students officially begin their medical school journey here in PEI.

This highly anticipated initiative is a major milestone in the province's efforts to strengthen the health-care system and train more doctors here at home. It is the result of strong collaboration and support from the Government of PEI, Memorial University, UPEI, and partners across the health sector.

This new program gives Islanders the chance to complete their medical education right here at home. The province's investment in this initiative is part of a long-term strategy to strengthen health care and build a sustainable physician workforce.

"Having Island students begin medical training here at home is a proud moment for our province. This is about more than a first day of classes. It is about building the future of our health care system, improving access to care, and ensuring Islanders will have the services they need for generations to come."

Hon. Rob Lantz, Premier of Prince Edward Island

The new campus at UPEI will deliver Memorial University's accredited Doctor of Medicine (MD) program with a strong focus on training physicians in rural settings.

"Across the country there are physician shortages and a lack of training opportunities. This program is about ensuring that more Islanders have access to high quality medical training delivered close to home," said Minister of Health and Wellness, Mark McLane. "By training physicians here at home, we are building a stronger, more sustainable health-care system for the future. Congratulations to the first class of students you are making history today."

Students participated in orientation activities last week and begin their first classes on August 25. This program marks an exciting new chapter in medical education for the province and in the effort to improve access to health care for Islanders.

"Providing this level of training and education within the province opens meaningful pathways for Islanders pursuing careers in medicine," said Minister Workforce, Advanced Learning and Population, Jenn Redmond. "Students will benefit from quality curriculum, hands-on experience, and a strong connection to the communities they will one day serve."

The UPEI satellite campus is an extension of Memorial University's Faculty of Medicine in Newfoundland and Labrador and follows the same rigorous standards and curriculum as the main campus. Clinical training will take place across PEI's health system, providing students with hands-on experience in Island communities.
