The return of Godzilla? Zombie apocalypse? Only in the movies! When it comes to real-life emergencies like tornados or other life-threatening situations, the University of Regina is asking students, faculty, staff, and visitors to download the new Alertus emergency notification app to receive push notifications when an actual emergency is taking place on campus. The new Alertus app is free to download from the iOS App Store and Google Play Store.
It's the latest addition to the University's Emergency Notification System (ENS). The ENS is designed to ensure effective and timely warnings in the event of a life threatening situation when people must take immediate action to stay safe on campus.
"The emergency notification system uses our existing infrastructure - such as U of R computer monitors, wall-mounted beacons, and hallway television screens across the main and College Avenue campuses - to push out emergency messages. The U of R Alertus app will now allow us to push those notifications to personal mobile devices so anyone can receive the message anywhere they have service," says Darren Cherwaty, Director of Health, Safety, and Wellness.
Activating a notification is decided on a case-by-case basis.
The new Alertus app replaces the notification function that was previously available on the official student app - which is a great way for students to check their class schedules, grades, important contacts, campus life resources, and more. Both apps are now available from the app stores.
