YUKON
Government of Yukon announces location for new École Whitehorse Elementary School

October 4, 2024

The Government of Yukon has selected the site for the new École Whitehorse Elementary School, which will be built at the northwest corner of the Takhini Educational Land Reserve. The project aligns with the Government of Yukon's commitment to modern, state-of-the-art educational facilities that meet community needs and environmental standards.

The decision follows a thorough site analysis and stakeholder consultation process. The site offers numerous advantages, including improved sports facilities, minimal impact on existing school operations and better traffic management. The detailed site analysis by Kobayashi + Zedda Architects scored this location the highest among the three potential options evaluated. Key factors in the selection included the separation of school boundaries, improved multi-sport facilities and cost efficiency.

The next phase of this project will involve critical assessments to ensure the school meets the highest standards of safety, sustainability and functionality. These assessments include a comprehensive traffic impact study and a detailed environmental site review. Upon completion, the project will move into the conceptual design phase, where the vision for the school will begin to take shape.

The new school site overlaps with two existing softball fields used by Softball Yukon for programming, league play and tournaments. The Government of Yukon will continue working with Softball Yukon to identify solutions that will enable the organization to continue offering valuable sports opportunities to its nearly 2,000 members.

"We are very happy to announce the chosen location for the new École Whitehorse Elementary School. The selection process was comprehensive and inclusive, ensuring we made the best decision for the future of education in Whitehorse. We are excited to move forward with this project and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on our community."

Minister of Education Jeanie McLean

"We are excited to be moving forward with the next phase of this project. The new school site not only represents a step forward in reducing our environmental footprint but also in creating a space that benefits the entire community. With upgraded sporting facilities and a state-of-the-art learning environment, we are providing a space where every child can thrive. This project is a testament to our commitment to building a future that prioritizes education, community and sustainability."

Minister of Highways and Public Works Nils Clarke

"Our government recognizes sport and recreation contribute to the health and wellbeing of our territory. We have been working with Softball Yukon to minimize any disruptions this project may cause and explore improvements that could be made for the softball community. We are confident we will find ways they can continue offering the programming, league play, and tournaments Yukoners have become accustomed to."
