LETHBRIDGE
New school busing transition agreement between City Council and school divisions

January 29, 2020

In an effort to better facilitate the transition of ownership of school busing in the city, a one-year contract with the school districts was approved today (1/27) by City Council.

In November last year, City Council voted to end the contract with the Lethbridge School Division and the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division to provide student transportation in the city. The decision stemmed from the recommendations made by KPMG in the phase one report of the City-wide operational review.

"We as Council understand the responsibility in providing this type of service for families in Lethbridge and want help the school divisions be as successful as they can in this transition," said Deputy Mayor, Belinda Crowson. "By agreeing to a one-year contract, both parties feel this will allow the time and care needed to make this transition in a thoughtful way."

The current contract is set to expire on July 31 of this year. The new agreement will start on August 1 and conclude on July 31, 2021.

Mayor Chris Spearman believes this is a desirable compromise and one that allows both the City and the school divisions to continue to provide a safe and reliable student transportation.

"We believe this to be the best possible solution for both the City and the school divisions and more importantly, families who rely on this service," said Spearman. "We remain committed to a smooth transition in support of safety for our youngest residents."

As part of the resolution, City Council has requested administration to provide quarterly updates on the transition process until its completion.
