Earlier this month, the City learned of discussions by the Parkland School Division Board of Trustees related to the future of Spruce Grove Composite High School, which is currently home to Horizon Stage.
During a March 2 meeting , the school board discussed a modernization or replacement of Spruce Grove Composite High School as part of their three-year capital plan .
The City does have concerns about what this could mean for the future of Horizon Stage and we are committed to having conversations with Parkland School Division throughout the decision making process. It's important to remember it is still very early in the process and no firm decisions have been made at this time.
"Horizon Stage has been an important cultural component of our community," said Mayor Stuart Houston. "At this time, it's too early to speculate what a modernization or replacement of the high school will mean for the facility, but I want to assure patrons, performers, user groups, and residents that we will be working with the school division and evaluating all of the options that may be possible."
Horizon Stage has been closed to the public since March 2020 due to COVID-19 and related provincial restrictions/public health orders related to indoor gatherings and gathering sizes.
"We recognize the impact the pandemic, and the related restrictions, have had on live performing arts opportunities and events," said Mayor Houston. "As a City, we are choosing to take this opportunity to review how we deliver culture programming and utilize cultural assets in the best way possible. We care about the future of culture in Spruce Grove and will continue exploring options with our community as well as our regional partners."
