City and College Formalize Partnership to Support Growth and Innovation

The City of Thunder Bay and Confederation College have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to formalize their partnership focused on advancing community growth, innovation, and talent development.

The agreement supports the City's Maamawe, Growing Together Corporate Strategic Plan and directly advances priorities identified in the Smart Growth Action Plan by strengthening collaboration with local post-secondary institutions and leveraging applied learning, research, and innovation to support community and economic growth.

"Formalizing this partnership allows us to work more strategically with Confederation College," said John Collin, City Manager. "The agreement supports Council's growth priorities by strengthening collaboration, driving innovation, and creating meaningful opportunities for the community."

The three-year MOU provides a framework for collaboration in areas such as applied research, policy development, talent development, innovation, and advancing Truth and Reconciliation. The partnership also aligns with Confederation College's Teaching and Research plan, emphasizing applied learning and community engagement.

"Through applied learning and research, our students and employees will continue to contribute to initiatives that support the city's growth and create meaningful, real-world impact."

The agreement builds on the success of CityStudio Thunder Bay, a three-year initiative involving the City, Confederation College, Lakehead University, and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine University, which connects students to real-world municipal challenges. To date, Confederation College has partnered on 63 CityStudio projects, delivering practical solutions that support the City's growth and innovation objectives.

There are no direct financial implications associated with the MOU. The partnership will be supported through regular leadership meetings, a joint Oversight Committee, and periodic reporting to City Council.
