On Monday Aug. 29, MNA Nicole Ménard made a special visit to Champlain College Saint-Lambert in order to bestow the National Assembly Medal of Honour on Constituent College Director Don Shewan.
Ménard is the representative for the riding of Laporte in the Montérégie region for the Quebec Liberal Party. She has announced her intention to retire from politics and is not running for re-election this year.
The Medal of Honour is given in recognition of citizens who have distinguished themselves by their careers, their work or their engagement.
"Throughout his career, Mr. Don Shewan worked tirelessly for the academic perseverance of young Quebecers," said Ménard.
"In recognition of everything he has achieved over the years, I am pleased to award him the Medal of the Québec National Assembly, the highest distinction award given by elected officials. This award also acknowledges his efforts to promote and develop the Saint-Lambert campus in our community and the greater Montréal area. Thank you Mr Shewan for immense contribution!"
Don Shewan has been serving as the director of Champlain College Saint-Lambert since 2003 and has been a member of the administration since 1974.
"I share this honour with the incredible administrators, faculty and staff who have helped build Champlain into the institution it is today. I am so moved to be receiving this recognition on the College's 50th anniversary and accept it on behalf of all those who have come before me," said Shewan.
He went on to thank Ménard for her significant contributions to the College during her tenure in politics.
"She was instrumental in helping Champlain secure government support for the library and cafeteria expansion project and for the construction of the H Block which houses our nursing program," said Shewan.
"Without her support, these projects likely never would have come to pass. We thank Nicole for her tremendous contributions," he added.
