The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has begun releasing the adapted draft Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 (JK-12) curriculum as part of its shift to British Columbia's curricular framework.
All Northwest Territories (NWT) schools will begin trialing the draft curriculum in some or all subjects, depending on region, in Grades 4-6 and Grade 9 in the 2023-24 school year.
The Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) and its education partners want to ensure that the curriculum is reflective of NWT communities and contexts.
Working groups of NWT teachers and subject-area experts were formed for each subject, such as math and science. These working groups reviewed all of BC's curriculum and adapted it to reflect feedback received throughout engagements with education partners, including the Northwest Territories Teachers' Association, education bodies and Indigenous Governments.
BC's curriculum is structured in a way that makes it flexible and adaptable at the school and classroom level. Adaptations to the curriculum ensure that it will be open to NWT Indigenous ways, will appropriately challenge students, will support key learning for life, and will be competency-driven.
ECE has published the draft adapted curricula for trialling grades on ConnectEd NWT, where all members of the public can view and provide feedback by emailing nwtcurriculum_renewal@gov.nt.ca.
Throughout the trialling of the draft curriculum, the GNWT will also be gathering feedback from teachers and students to improve and finalize the curriculum.
