ÉCOLE DE TECHNOLOGIE SUPÉRIEURE
ÉTS receives support from the federal and provincial governments

April 26, 2017

On April 25, École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) and its partners announced their plans for a $67.1 M investment, the largest since the school was established in the area in 1997. The announcement was made jointly by Kirsty Duncan, the federal Minister of Science, Hélène David, the Québec Minister of Higher Education, and Harout Chitilian, Vice-president of the executive committee of the Ville de Montréal.

Three separate projects will be financed through the Canadian Strategic Investment Fund and the Québec Infrastructure Plan: the repurposing of the DOW Planetarium, the expansion and reconfiguration of the library and the construction of a new pavilion.

According to Pierre Dumouchel, Director General of ÉTS: "This morning's (April 25) announcement represents a substantive level of support for ÉTS that will allow us to adequately respond to the significant increase in our clientele over the past several years. ÉTS is delighted with this confirmation of financial support from the federal and provincial governments for the completion of the three projects that are being funded, and we would like to express our sincere gratitude. I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the ongoing support that we receive from the Ville de Montréal in connection with the development of ÉTS."

The DOW Planetarium, which was ceded to ÉTS by the Ville de Montréal, will be used for the expansion of Centech, one of the most important business incubator for technological entrepreneurs with strong commercial potential in Canada. Among other services, this breeding ground for new ideas offers open innovation spaces for large corporations. This project receives $3.3 M in federal funding and $3.4 M from the provincial government.

The upgrading of the library is necessary primarily due to the lack of space, because it has essentially remained the same size since it was first opened. On the other hand, the student clientele has increased from 3,500 students in 1997 to more than 10,600 in 2017. The library spaces also need to be reconfigured to accommodate new information technologies and new learning spaces in order to deliver a superior-quality student experience and to meet the growing need for spaces dedicated to studying, the provision of services and learning. This project will be able to meet these objectives thanks to a federal contribution of $2.5 M, a provincial funding of $2.8 M, and an ÉTS contribution of $1.3 M.

Finally, we will be able to undertake the construction of a new pavilion as a result of support from the Government of Canada in the amount of $26.9 M and a $16.1 M investment from the Government of Québec, along with $10.8 M from ÉTS. Among other things, this new pavilion will house a high-performance computing centre, approximately thirty classrooms, workshops associated with ÉTS student clubs and a learning and relaxation area. In addition, a park will be built to tie the new pavilion in with the Maison des étudiants (Student House), which is located nearby.
