ALBERTA UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS
AUArts Alum Wins Cultural Leaders Legacy Arts Award

November 2, 2022

A big congratulations to Danielle Piper (BFA '20, Drawing) for winning the Indigenous Artist Award in the Cultural Leaders Legacy Arts Awards (external link).

Sponsored by TD Bank Group, the Indigenous Artist Award (external link) was established in 2020 in partnership with the Calgary Public Library's residency program and aims to recognize the contribution of Indigenous artists, craftspeople, and Knowledge Keepers to Calgary. The Calgary Public Library manages the selection process for this award and residency.

In response to the calls of action in The City of Calgary's White Goose Flying report, the award seeks to honour Indigenous cultures and to promote intercultural understanding, perspective-taking, and communication between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

A legacy of Calgary's year as a Cultural Capital of Canada, each Cultural Leaders Legacy Arts Award is funded by a contribution from a local philanthropist or organization with matching money from Calgary 2012.

These awards are $5,000 cash prizes that support artists, arts organizations, arts administrators, and volunteers.

Danielle Piper, the 2022 Indigenous Artist in Residence, walks through her residency project, Mâwasakokwâtam, and shares the meaning behind her art.
