MacEwan University is responding to the need to increase the number of health-care professionals in Alberta by offering an additional avenue for nurses to prepare to enter the workforce.
The new Bridge to Canadian Nursing program is a one-year certificate program that allows individuals with previous nursing education to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to meet entry-level competencies in Alberta and Canada.
This program is open to internationally educated nurses who want to practice in Canada, or locally educated nurses who want to refresh their skills or upgrade their knowledge. The program is student-focused and flexible in both class schedule and clinical placements, opening up the opportunity for a variety of students to enroll. Students can choose as many courses as they wish within the program, earning a certificate if all courses and requirements are completed.
"MacEwan University continues to graduate highly qualified students that are ready to step into registered nursing roles in the health-care system as soon as they graduate," says Dr. Christy Raymond, dean, Faculty of Nursing. "The Bridge to Canadian Nursing program at MacEwan provides flexible options for those who wish to further solidify their knowledge and skills related to registered nursing practice in Canada. We are excited to offer this program in Edmonton and are ready to start taking applications now for a Fall 2023 start."
The Bridge to Canadian Nursing program helps students meet the acute and changing needs of patients by offering experiences in theory, lab and practice settings, all of which are aligned with the entry-level competencies for registered nurses (RN) as outlined by the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). As part of the program, students can participate in a combined supervised and preceptored clinical nursing practice experience. Placements may be scheduled during the day, the evening or on weekends and rural placements are a possibility for many students.
The application fee will be waived for individuals applying to the first cohort of Bridge to Canadian Nursing in Fall 2023
