MACEWAN UNIVERSITY
University announces upcoming Theatre Season

March 25, 2024

Pulling inspiration from everything from '80s teen movies to Canadian sports history, the 2024/25 Theatre Season at MacEwan University has something for everyone. From month to month, four shows will hit the Triffo Theatre and Tim Ryan Theatre Lab stages, showcasing MacEwan's talented students in the Music Theatre Performance and Theatre Production majors in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program.

"Our upcoming season is incredibly diverse, with stories that challenge us to look at traditional ideas in new and inspiring ways," says Dawn Sadoway, department chair and assistant professor in the Department of Theatre

The season kicks off with Glory, directed by Amber Borotsik, in the Tim Ryan Theatre Lab from October 30 to November 3. In 1933, four friends set out to prove to Canada that hockey isn't just a sport for men. Told through music and dance inspired by the Jazz Age, Glory is a thrilling hockey story that proves a woman's place is on home ice.

From November 27 to December 3, head to the Triffo Theatre to catch Heathers, The Musical directed by Leigh Rivenbark. This is a hilarious, heartfelt and homicidal new show based on the movie that some consider to be the greatest teen comedy of all time. It's a moving love story with laugh-out-loud comedy and an unflinching look at the joys and anguish of high school.

Jim Guedo directs Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 in the Tim Ryan Theatre Lab from February 12 to 16, 2025. This show is an electropop opera ripped from a slice of Tolstoy's War and Peace. Fresh from an acclaimed run on Broadway, this award-winning musical expands the possibilities of music theatre with its daring score and bold storytelling.

The season wraps up with The Prom, directed by alum Byron Martin, Theatre Arts '09, running from March 26 to 30, 2025 in the Triffo Theatre. A town's parents want to keep their prom on the straight and narrow - but when one student just wants to bring her girlfriend, the entire town has a date with destiny. The Prom captures all the humour and heart of a classic musical comedy with a modern message.
