Keyano College Appoints First Research Chair in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

In line to position itself as a leader in applied research and teaching, Keyano College is thrilled to announce the appointment of Maike Schmieding as the inaugural Research Chair in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. This prestigious appointment reflects Maike's exceptional contributions to their field and underscores Keyano College's commitment to fostering ground-breaking research and intellectual excellence.

Dr. Sandra Efu, Vice President, Academic and Student Experience, notes, "Maike's research will not only enrich our understanding of effective pedagogy but also guide us in implementing best practices in teaching methodologies. We are confident that Maike's leadership in this role will further elevate the reputation of Keyano College as a centre for teaching and learning excellence."

Maike is stepping into the role after being with the College in different capacities, including as a LINC Instructor and Access Strategist for Accessibility & Wellness Services, having worked closely with all departments and staff. She has experience driving, developing, and facilitating research in educational and mental health-related fields. She is practiced in working with other academic institutions and building collaborations and partnerships across various disciplines. She is also currently the Vice Chair for PADRA (Post-Secondary Accessibility and Disability Resource Association Alberta), a Research and Ethics Board member, and sits on the Academic Council.

In her role, Maike will work closely with key stakeholders to advance research on improving teaching and learning practices. Among other areas, Maike's research will evaluate the effectiveness of current teaching methods while drawing on research insights to suggest new approaches that foster knowledge dissemination.

Maike is delighted to take on this new challenge. "As a dedicated researcher with a passion for community-based research, I am excited to bring my expertise to this position and contribute to the continued growth and excellence of Keyano College. I am excited to spearhead this new chapter for the College, collaborate with my colleagues, and engage with students to foster a culture of inquiry and innovation."

Maike will be based at the College's Clearwater Campus, working closely with a diverse team of researchers and collaborating with academic and industry partners to catalyze breakthrough research.
