SOUTHERN ALBERTA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
Integrated AI program delivers new approach to a technology-driven tomorrow

February 23, 2024

The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) is launching a 30-week Integrated Artificial Intelligence (AI) certificate program beginning Spring 2024 the first accredited AI program in Alberta. The intentionally designed curriculum will teach individuals looking to elevate their careers how to actively engage with AI tools and better understand how they can be used to work more efficiently and effectively.

"What makes our program stand out is integration. We're teaching you how to use the new reality of technology to enhance your performance as an individual," says Dr. Banks Odole, Academic Chair, Data Portfolio and Artificial Intelligence, School for Advanced Digital Technology (SADT). "We're focused on transforming workplace efficiencies by leading innovation to unlock the full potential of AI."

With courses developed to enhance problem-solving and critical thinking skills, learners will examine the ethical implications and responsible practices around the use of AI. Exploring the management and analysis of data through the lens of a people-first approach, technical skills will be taught to empower professionals to lead AI projects across industries from health care to energy.

"As partners in our community and society, we need people to understand the ethical implications of using technology smartly, and the potential power and influence of these tools," says Amos Ngai, Associate Dean, SADT. "We're moving into this next phase of technology and it is exciting to see where it can go."

The certificate also incorporates a capstone project where students will gain hands-on experience in AI implementation as they work on projects addressing real-world challenges using the foundational skills learned throughout the program.

"Part of the program is learning how we teach computers to think and how it impacts your decision making. It isn't only about how people interact with technology, but through artificial intelligence, we're allowing technology to interact with us in a way that makes sense," says Ngai. "You'll be able to show an employer how to leverage AI and to see where it fits within an organization. These tools are available so let's use them to our benefit."

By identifying the AI knowledge gap, SAIT is ready to train individuals looking to elevate their careers by successfully integrating cutting-edge technology into their business practices. Unlocking the full potential of AI will accelerate career paths as graduates are positioned as sought-after experts in systems integration and operation.

"People hear the phrase artificial intelligence and think they'll need an extensive background in coding. That isn't the case with our program. We are looking for a background in understanding data and basic programming logic. If you're familiar with Excel formulas then you're ready to learn integrated AI," says Dr. Odole.

This program will move beyond the narrative of AI replacing jobs by training tomorrow's workforce to use these tools responsibly and simplify the way we work through streamlining efficiencies, finding new technology-based solutions and leading innovation in the workplace.
