COLLEGE OF THE ROCKIES
COTR, Cranbrook Public Library partner on lecture series

December 14, 2023

College of the Rockies, in partnership with the Cranbrook Public Library, will offer the first in a series of free public lectures on December 21, the winter solstice. The series, known as a Museia, was created by the faculty in University Arts and Sciences at the College. A Museia is a festival in honour of the Greek muses who inspired sciences, mathematics, literature, and arts.

Dr. Ben Tippett will kick off the COTR Museia with a free talk about Black Holes on December 21, from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at the Cranbrook Public Library.

The December 21 inaugural lecture will take place at the Cranbrook Public Library from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. Dr. Ben Tippett, Astronomy and Physics instructor in the College's department of Math and Sciences, will explain the history of black holes, the paradoxes of their existence, the mysteries they contain inside of their cores, and the physical evidence we have that they really and truly exist.

"Black Holes are perhaps the most amazing things in the universe," Tippett says. "They are made from the concepts of space and time and are sink-holes from which not even light can escape. Despite this, they are the source of the brightest light in the cosmos."

Dr. Tippett is also host of a popular podcast, The Titanium Physicist, where each episode he brings together two physicists with some of the most fun and interesting people he has ever met, to have a conversation about a physics topic.  It's fun, fascinating, and entirely unique. Whose Line is it Anyway? fans will want to check out the episode featuring Greg Proops.

Further lectures are currently scheduled for the spring and summer solstices. March 21 will see Vance Mattson discussing The Death of God and Modern Life while Tippett will return, June 21 to talk about Lightning.

All lectures are free but interested individuals are asked to pre-register.
