Douglas College Veterinary Technology (VTEC) grads are excelling on a national - and international - stage, next to post-secondary students from across Canada and the US.
Results are in for the August 2018 Veterinary Technician National Exam, and Douglas College grads surpassed the average score by 17 percent overall. The average score for Douglas College grads was 82.42 percent, while the average for all candidates was 65.27 percent.
Also, for the second year in a row, Douglas College graduates boasted a 100 percent pass rate on the exam.
"Our graduates should be very proud of their accomplishments, and our faculty and staff should be commended for the commitment to preparing students for their exams and their career ahead," said Brian Chapell, Dean of Science and Technology.
The exam consists of nine sections in categories such as diagnostic imaging, surgical nursing and dentistry. Every Douglas grad scored at least 13 percent above average in each of the sections.
Dr. Pauline Chow, Coordinator of the Veterinary Technology program, said the program's strict entrance requirements, combined with a demanding curriculum, ensures students are more than prepared for both the national exam and their future careers.
"Their success is reflected in the longevity of the program, which has been offered at Douglas College for over a decade," she said.
Since 2007, the VTEC program has provided a progressive education to people who want to become veterinary nurses. The program works with the local veterinary community through partnerships with animal shelters and rescue organizations.
