The heart of the Douglas College New Westminster Campus is receiving a $10.5 million refresh to centralize student services at the campus. Once complete, in summer 2020, the 25,000 square foot space will centralize financial aid, enrolment and academic advising, as well as counseling, accessibility services, recruitment, and career services.
The new space will house four departments - the Office of the Registrar, Student Affairs and Services, the Career Centre, and the Future Students' Office - all of which will serve as a centralized services location for Douglas students. The new location and additional technology will streamline services and improve the student experience.
"This new centralized space will make it easier for students to access support to be successful at the College," says Dr. Kathy Denton, Douglas College President and CEO. "Students will have an improved one-stop area to get questions answered, register for classes, seek financial support, or discover other resources to support their time here."
Douglas College will fund $8.5 million of the $10.5 million project from the College's capital reserve with $2 million of support coming from capital funding from the province of British Columbia.
When opened in summer 2020, the refreshed space will feature an open and welcoming floorplan, updated furniture and custom millwork designed for flexible usage. Meeting area doors will be retractable to create more collaboration space, and soft seating will provide new after-hours study space for students. Self-service kiosks will also be available, providing students the opportunity to choose how best to be supported.
"We are responding to the changing needs of students," says Denton. "Starting these renovations now, at the beginning of our fiftieth year will ensure Douglas can be flexible to students' needs well into the future."
