AURORA COLLEGE
Inaugural meeting of new Aurora College Board of Governors held May 2

May 11, 2023

The new Board of Governors of Aurora College held its inaugural meeting at Thebacha Campus in Fort Smith on Tuesday, May 2.

Board members were in Fort Smith May 1-3 for orientation to their new positions. During that time, they had the opportunity to tour Thebacha Campus facilities and meet with several staff and faculty members.

During the public meeting, the Board heard presentations from the Town of Fort Smith and Thebacha MLA Frieda Martselos about the current, future and historic importance of Aurora College to the community of Fort Smith. MLA Martselos was accompanied by representatives from Salt River First Nation and Northwest Territory Métis Nation. On May 3, Board members held an informal luncheon with Town of Fort Smith leadership.

The next two Board of Governors meetings are scheduled for Thursday, June 1 in Yellowknife and Thursday, June 15 in Inuvik to coincide with Convocation Ceremonies in those communities. Announcements with more details about those meetings will be shared in the near future.

The plan is to rotate scheduled face-to-face meetings of the Board between the three campus communities of Fort Smith, Yellowknife and Inuvik.

Quotes:

"I was pleased to meet and begin work with the members of the new Aurora College Board of Governors. We are a diverse group who represent a variety of backgrounds, experiences, skills, industries and regions, with a common goal of focussing on the post-secondary and adult education needs of all NWT residents and communities. We were impressed with the excellent facilities and the professional staff at Thebacha Campus, and we look forward to our visits to Yellowknife and Inuvik next month."

 - Joseph Handley, Chair, Aurora College Board of Governors
