JUSTICE INSTITUTE OF BRITISH COLUMBIA
JIBC among Top 50 Canadian research colleges and institutes

February 3, 2023

The Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) has been recognized as one of the top colleges and institutes in Canada for research.

JIBC was ranked fourth in B.C. and 48th nationally in the annual Top Research Colleges list produced by Research Infosource Inc.

In fiscal 2022, JIBC conducted approximately $1.35 million in research with a focus on applied research in the areas of public safety and security. This was a 73.2 per cent increase from the previous year, the seventh-highest level of growth among ranked institutions.

"JIBC is pleased to return to the Top 50 Research Colleges list," said Dr. Michel Tarko, JIBC President and CEO. "This recognition highlights our unique role as a post-secondary institution which supports applied research aimed at improving outcomes for those working across the multiple disciplines in the justice and public safety sector for which we train."

An example of a project funded during the reporting period was a $50,000 research infrastructure grant from the Canada Foundation for Innovation for improvements to JIBC's Praxis

system. Praxis is an online, interactive simulation-training environment that delivers experiential learning through scenario- and problem-based exercises.

Praxis is a key tool supporting a JIBC applied research project that is exploring the challenges and innovations resulting from Canadian paramedics' response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

JIBC was among four post-secondary institutions from British Columbia on the list, including B.C. Institute of Technology, Selkirk College and Camosun College.
