Langara College's Nursing Program Blends Practical Experience and Support

November 26, 2024

Langara College's Nursing program blends practical experience and support, helping students advance toward careers in nursing. As we celebrate National Nursing Students' Week, two students share their stories.

In a world where the demand for healthcare professionals continues to grow, Langara College's Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program is dedicated to preparing students for the challenges and rewards of nursing. One of Canada's most successful nursing programs, with a passing rate close to 97%, it offers a pathway to becoming licensed professionals equipped to make an impact in diverse healthcare environments.

We spoke to two nursing students, Marcelyn Bacomo and Emma Suzuki, who shared how their time at Langara has been a transformative journey.

Real-world learning in a supportive environment.

One key aspect that sets Langara's nursing program apart is its clinical site variety, which gives students hands-on experience across different healthcare settings.

"Clinical site variety has opened my eyes to different fields of nursing," says Marcelyn Bacomo, who began her studies at Langara with a Health Science Certificate and is now completing her BSN. "Being able to gain different experiences during school hours really guides my decision on what type of nursing I would like to do in the future."

For Emma Suzuki, Langara's intimate cohort sizes have fostered an invaluable support network. "The smaller cohorts at Langara's nursing program have enabled me to develop close relationships with my peers," she explains. "These relationships have made me feel supported during my time in the program because I can go to them for help, whether academically or personally."

Additionally, Langara's simulation labs - complete with high-tech mannequins - help students practice complex clinical scenarios in a safe and controlled setting, building their confidence and skills before they step into real patient care.

For both students, Langara's dedicated faculty is a significant factor in their positive experience. "Instructors go above and beyond for their students," says Marcelyn.

Langara's program also offers various student groups and mentorship programs to provide resources and guidance. "Attending workshops and participating in mentorships helped me transition into nursing school smoothly," Emma says.

This network of support helps students navigate the demands of nursing education, which requires both resilience and effective time management.

Paving the way for future careers.

As these students prepare for their careers, their goals reflect the breadth of opportunities in nursing.

Marcelyn, already a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), dreams of becoming a Clinical Nurse Educator, combining her passion for nursing and teaching. She credits Langara's Advanced Entry to the BSN program for LPNs as a stepping stone toward achieving her dream, saying, "Langara has given me the opportunity to use my LPN education as a foundation."

Emma aspires to become a nurse practitioner, focusing on patient care and therapeutic communication - skills she has honed through Langara's curriculum. "Communication with patients is vital to promote effective nursing care, and the courses at Langara have helped me develop in this area," she notes.
