Langara College is launching a new Digital Media and Design (DGMD) diploma program, a two-year program blending design, coding, ethical AI, and creativity to prepare students for careers in digital media, UI/UX, and web development.
Langara College is excited to announce the launch of its new Digital Media and Design (DGMD) diploma program, a two-year program that prepares students for careers in digital design, front end development, and creative technology. The program uniquely blends creative design with digital fluency, equipping graduates with the practical skills needed to thrive in today's fast-evolving digital industry.
A response to industry needs.
The DGMD program was developed in response to a growing demand for professionals who possess both creative and technical expertise. "We want to support students coming from general arts backgrounds by providing more specific credentials and applied skills for the job market," explains Katie Davis, chair of the Design Formation department. "This program fills a gap in Langara's curriculum, offering an accessible pathway for both domestic and international students."
Preparing students for the future.
The curriculum emphasizes essential elements of design while integrating technical training in coding and emerging technologies. "We aim to create designers who understand code and coders who appreciate design," says Dave Savard, a key contributor to the program's development. "While students may not graduate as full-fledged front-end developers, they will be prepared for entry-level positions in UI/UX design and web development."
The two-year program culminates in a capstone course, where students apply their learning in hands-on digital projects that simulate real-world scenarios. The program encompasses technical or applied classes, as well as courses in soft skills, business, and Indigenous practices, ensuring a well-rounded foundation for professional success.
Empowering future creatives.
The DGMD diploma not only focuses on technical proficiency but also fosters adaptability and confidence among students. "Soft skills, like teamwork and communication, are critical in today's workforce," Davis notes. "Our goal is to provide students with durable tools that allow them to navigate the complexities of the digital landscape."
By combining creativity, technology, and practical experience, Langara College's Digital Media and Design Diploma empowers students to become innovative thinkers and digital problem-solvers, ready to make their mark in the world of design and media.
