NORTHERN LIGHTS COLLEGE
Dean of Trades receives Canadian Armed Forces commendation

October 23, 2023

This was a special day for NLC's Dean of Trades and Apprenticeships.

Jessie Drew, Vice President, Community Relations and Institutional Strategy; Leo Manning, Dean of Trades and Apprenticeships; and Todd Bondaroff, President.

Leo Manning, whose unit served in the 1st Battalion, Royal 22e Regiment Battle Group of the Canadian Armed Forces out of Courcelette, Quebec, was awarded the Commander-in-Chief (CinC) Unit Commendation.

Created in 2002 by then-Governor General Adrienne Clarkson, the CinC commendation "is awarded to those that have performed an extraordinary deed or activity of a rare high standard in extremely hazardous circumstances."

Leo received the commendation for being part of the group that opened the airport in the besieged city of Sarajevo in July 1992. While surrounded and being shot at on all sides, the battalion secured the Sarajevo airport for humanitarian relief flights. As a result of their presence, the anti-aircraft weapons, howitzers, and tanks stationed around the airport were soon forced to draw back.

Our heartfelt congratulations to Leo!
