RRU Remembers: Tribute to former RRU President Allan Cahoon

April 12, 2024

It is with sadness that Royal Roads University acknowledges the passing of Allan Cahoon. Cahoon served as our university's third president and vice-chancellor.

Cahoon was an admired leader and educator at Royal Roads. Described by colleagues as a visionary and friend, his time at the university was marked by a deep commitment to students and an unwavering passion for fostering inclusivity and diversity.

Under Cahoon's leadership, Royal Roads became a beacon of 21st-century education, welcoming wider communities, developing international partnerships and pioneering programs tailored for mid-career professionals.

His keen business acumen and subtle yet profound sense of humor, played a pivotal role in shaping the university into a world-renowned institution. His gentle and approachable demeanor allowed him to bring his vision to life in a quiet and unassuming manner.

Continuously seeking ways to enhance Royal Roads, Cahoon earned both admiration and respect among peers, students, and alumni fortunate enough to work with him and learn from him. His dedication to blending online education with on-campus learning reflected his deep understanding of our students' evolving needs and the ever-changing landscape of global education. His commitment to ensuring that education was accessible to all resonated deeply within our community.

During his tenure, he engaged in many important initiatives including the President's Aboriginal Support Bursary, the Allan Cahoon Global Advancement and Diversity Award, and the Allan Cahoon Scholarship. These are aimed at nurturing the next generation of scholars and leaders and have left an enduring imprint on the university and our students.

His legacy will continue to inspire us as we strive to uphold his values of making the world a better place through education.

In remembrance of a truly visionary leader and friend of RRU, the flag will be flown at half-mast until sunset on April 13, 2024.
