UVic is the first post-secondary institution in B.C. to launch a contactless digital ID card.
All current UVic students, faculty, and staff with a compatible Apple or Android device can now download the mobile ONECard to their digital wallet.
Staff member holds up UVic ONECard in one hand and mobile phone with ONECard app in other.
With the simple tap of a phone or a smart watch, mobile ONECard users can buy food on campus, take out books from the library, shop at the UVic Bookstore, access the gym, gain entry to buildings with card access locks, and more.
The adoption of the technology, which is powered by Transact Mobile Credential, means secured transactions take less than a second in a streamlined experience.
The physical ONECard is still accepted across campus. The mobile ONECard is simply a digital extension of the physical card and an additional option for everyday ease and convenience.
Post-secondary students in today's world expect a mobile-first experience when it comes to buying goods and accessing services on campus. We're excited to be able to provide this technology to modernize and enhance day-to-day transactions."
Jim Forbes, Senior Director of Campus Engagement at UVic
Beta testing of the technology has been underway since July 2024, providing some select students and staff the opportunity to try out the mobile ONECard over the last few months.
Getting food and going to the gym with just my phone has only made my campus life more convenient. I appreciate that I can see my ONECard Flex funds directly on the digital card, and I now have one less thing I need to keep track of!"
Simrit Grewal, a UVic undergraduate student double majoring in Psychology and English
Although the mobile ONECard will be accepted as ID at service counters across the university, it will not be accepted as an official form of identification for exams. Students will still be required to show their physical ONECard for face-to-face exams and assessments.
