VANCOUVER COMMUNITY COLLEGE
VCC expands green tech fleet for student training

December 18, 2023

As part of its ongoing commitment to green energy and sustainability, Vancouver Community College (VCC) is proud to acquire the new all electric eCascadia class 8 semi to its fleet of heavy mechanical trades vehicles for student training.

The zero-emissions Freightliner is the first of its kind in Western Canada, boasting advanced automated safety systems, ergonomic seating for driver comfort, noise-reduction technology, rapid charging technology and state-of-the-art battery system for maximum driving range.

Earlier this year, VCC took possession of a 100 per cent electric Volvo excavator as well as an electric forklift and the Toyota Mira - the first hydrogen vehicle made available in the Canadian market. As more electric vehicles become mainstream in B.C., so is the need for more automotive and mechanical technicians to service and repair them.

VCC is already fully training its students on the latest cutting-edge technology and sustainability to help meet the province's target of zero net emissions by 2050. This past July, the B.C. government announced its plan to support the college with a new Centre for Clean Energy and Automotive Innovation off North Grandview Highway, where all of VCC's electric machinery will be housed.

For years, VCC has offered hands-on training as part of the student learning experience, and the latest addition of the electric semi will expand their technological knowledge in this growing industry.
