It is with great sadness that the Université de Moncton learned of the passing of Professor Emeritus Brian T. Newbold, former Associate President and long-time friend of the institution.
Mr. Newbold was one of the founding professors of the chemistry and biochemistry programs and department at the Université de Moncton in 1963. He served twice as Chair of the Department of Chemistry, as well as Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Science. He was also Associate President and Executive Vice-President of the Université de Moncton.
His track record, both at our university and in other institutions, was very eloquent. Professor Newbold has held several prestigious positions, including Chair of the University Committee for the Selection of Fellowships of the National Research Council of Canada and Chair of the University Committee for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
Author, lecturer and editor-in-chief of several scientific journals and newsletters, Professor Newbold has received countless awards and honors.
Throughout his prolific career, Professor Newbold encouraged students to excel in chemistry and biochemistry. A generous donor, he established the Brian T. Newbold Scholarship Fund, which recognizes the academic merit of students in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. His philanthropic commitment also led to the creation of the Brian T. Newbold Award, which recognizes excellence in introductory research projects. He was a Companion of the Order of Regents of the Université de Moncton.
The Université de Moncton is grateful to Professor Newbold for his valuable legacy and contributions to higher scientific education.
Flags will be flown at half-mast on all three Université de Moncton campuses on the day of the funeral, Monday, July 15.
