MSVU men's basketball team wins ACAA championship; Women take second

March 7, 2024

It was a big weekend for MSVU basketball student-athletes as they fought top rivals at the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association basketball championships held at Holland College.

The MSVU men's basketball team faced the St. Thomas University Tommies in a very close game that ended with a one-point win in overtime. The ACAA captured the final moments of the game this way: "In the end, it was fourth-year guard and Player of the Game Jaydan Smith who was the ultimate hero, scoring a three-point jump shot with 34 seconds remaining to send the Mystics home with a well-deserved 2024 ACAA Men's Basketball Championship."

After a stellar season, the top-ranked MSVU women's basketball team fought hard in their championship game. Though it didn't have the ending they'd hoped for, they had a strong showing and led at many points throughout the game. Menna McCabe was named MSVU's Player of the Game after recording 11 points, 14 rebounds, and one assist.

The weekend also featured an awards banquet at which a number of MSVU athletes were recognized, including:

  • Nikki Arsenault, Nalini Maharaj and Amanda Pearcey who were named to the Women's Basketball All-Conference First Team;
  • Jaydan Smith and Jaxon Smith who were named to the Men's Basketball All-Conference Second Team; and
  • Chase Tynes who was named to the Men's Basketball All-Conference First Team.

Congratulations to all members of both teams! You've made us #MSVUProud.
