Throughout this coming fall and winter, MSVU faculty and senior students will host a series of free hands-on science exploration opportunities for youth in grades 7 to 12. The first session is coming up on November 14!
This popular event series - called Science Circles - was started at MSVU in 2016 by associate professor of math (and MSVU alum!) Dr. Danielle Cox and colleagues.
The program is aimed at fostering an appreciation for the sciences by sharing interesting knowledge. It also seeks to build an understanding of university science programs, and includes lab and classroom components.
"Participants will get to see what university laboratories are like and see that university professors are not scary, but rather approachable, regular people who love to share knowledge and excite students about learning," said Danielle.
The 2024/2025 event line-up is as follows:
- Thursday, November 14 from 6:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. - Mathematics: The Game of SET; Explore the game of SET! (Among Dr. Cox's areas of expertise is the mathematics of games.) We will learn about the history of the game, ask (and answer!) some mathematical questions, and of course play the game. There is no need to know how to play SET; we will all learn together.
- Thursday, December 12 - Exploring biology (with a very cool lab component included!); Presented by professors Dr. David Awde and Dr. Lori Borgal and lab instructor Kevin Shaughnessy
- Thursday, March 20 - Psychology: All about stress; Presented by professor Dr. Jennifer Khoury
- Thursday, April 17 - Exploring chemistry; Presented by lab instructor Alyssa Doue
- May 2025 - Applied Human Nutrition
Details to come about the December through May sessions.
