New bursaries available for studies in French as a second language at Université Sainte-Anne

The new Bursaries for Postsecondary Studies in French as a Second Language (FSL) Program aims at encouraging a greater number of young English-speaking Canadians to become bilingual, while studying in their field of interest. Administered by the Association des collèges et universités de la francophonie canadienne (ACUFC), the program will award 850 non-renewable bursaries, each worth $ 3,000, on a yearly basis from 2020 to 2023. It is funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage.

Under the slogan "It's rewarding to be bilingual!", the program highlights the several benefits of pursuing postsecondary studies in French.

"Studying in French beyond high school contributes to strengthening sustained and gainful bilingualism in our country. Often, people who have studied French as a second language at the secondary or postsecondary level improve their knowledge of the French language and Francophone culture. Thanks to the FSL bursaries, they will have the opportunity to further develop their linguistic skills in postsecondary institutions that provide French-language programs, while delving into the diverse and rich culture of the Francophonie."

According to a study conducted by the Conference Board of Canada, bilingualism is also rewarding in economic terms, since it leads to better employment opportunities and wages. In fact, that's one of the reasons why we offer a guaranteed job placement in certain programs.

To access postsecondary FSL bursaries, students must meet specific eligibility criteria:

• Be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada, and at least 17 years old on the first day of class
• Have English as their first official language
• Have graduated from an English secondary school
• Provide a transcript certifying that they have taken French-language courses at high-school, college or university levels in Canada, for a minimum of two years
• Be enrolled in a first year and full-time college or undergraduate university program, and participate in at least 50% of their courses and related activities in French

Special attention will be paid to students who face financial challenges and those who are from under-represented groups.
