YORK UNIVERSITY
Global Strategy Lab marks decade of impact at York University

December 5, 2024

York University's Global Strategy Lab (GSL) is celebrating a remarkable decade of groundbreaking global health research and policy advisory services, marking the milestone with the appointment of Mathieu Poirier as its new director.

Founded in 2014, GSL has emerged as a pivotal research centre deeply aligned with York University's commitment to addressing complex global challenges. The lab has distinguished itself through interdisciplinary collaborations, particularly with the Dahdaleh Institute of Global Health Research and the School of Global Health

Over the past 10 years, GSL has produced transformative research across multiple domains. Its pioneering studies on the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control have innovated new ways of evaluating global health policy. The lab's work on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the establishment of the Wellcome Trust-funded AMR Policy Accelerator have been particularly noteworthy, offering critical insights for researchers and policymakers on evidence-informed, equitable approaches to global health governance. Perhaps most significantly, GSL was designated as York University's first WHO Collaborating Centre, a testament to its international reputation.

Incoming director Poirier aims to build on this legacy by expanding GSL's focus on AMR governance, tobacco control and trust in public health institutions. Emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches - spanning health economics, arts, epidemiology and political science - Poirier envisions the lab tackling the world's most pressing health challenges. "The significance of GSL's contributions cannot be overstated," he said. "I am excited to continue leading our impactful, equity-focused global health research as we look forward to GSL's next decade."

The Global Strategy Lab's trajectory demonstrates the critical role of focused, collaborative research in addressing complex global health issues. Under Poirier's leadership, the lab is poised to build upon its impressive decade of achievement, promising continued innovation and meaningful global impact.
