WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY
A new era in Laurier athletics: Kate McCrae Bristol appointed permanent director

October 2, 2023

After 18 months of dedicated service as Wilfrid Laurier University's acting Athletics and Recreation director, Kate McCrae Bristol has been appointed as the permanent director. With this transition, a new chapter begins in Golden Hawks Athletics and Recreation.

McCrae Bristol brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the role, holding a Master of Public Administration with a focus on leadership. Previously serving as Laurier's dean of students for the Waterloo campus, she was instrumental in enhancing the academic and personal journeys of students while ensuring their well-being and access to essential resources both in and outside of the classroom.

Before her tenure as dean of students, McCrae Bristol boasted an impressive coaching background in both U Sports and the NCAA. She served as an assistant basketball coach at Laurier, the University of Waterloo and Yale University. Additionally, her contributions extended to the national sports program manager position at Special Olympics Canada, where she gained invaluable insights that she intends to leverage at Laurier.

"Laurier is a special place. From a sports perspective, we cannot lose sight of what this program represents in our community, provincially and nationally," says McCrae Bristol. "Most importantly, this is a special place because of its history and tradition - a history and tradition focused on serving students, building community through our spirit and pride, and ensuring exceptional opportunities to be well, study and compete."

Recognizing the significance of community building and fundraising in her new role, McCrae Bristol previously served as the director of community engagement at St. Mary's General Hospital Foundation, where she played a pivotal role in developing relationships with community stakeholders.

Laurier Vice-President of Student Affairs Ivan Joseph expressed his enthusiasm for McCrae Bristol's appointment.

"Kate was made for this role. She has a clear vision, cares deeply about the student experience, and firmly believes in the importance of athletics and recreation on a university campus," says Joseph. "The university is poised to revitalize its playing fields, indoor facilities and expand opportunities for recreation and wellness, fostering athletic excellence that will ignite our campus spirit and pride."

McCrae Bristol's appointment is effective immediately, marking the commencement of transformative efforts across Laurier's campuses. An ambitious rejuvenation project is set to revamp athletic facilities on the Waterloo campus, with substantial improvements planned for playing fields, gyms and community gathering spaces.

Updates will be shared during the coming months as Laurier embraces a new era for all Golden Hawks.
