UNIVERSITY OF WINDSOR
UWindsor Comments on Provincial Investment in Universities

February 17, 2026

This morning, the Ontario Ministry of Universities, Colleges, and Research Excellence and Security (MCURES) announced a landmark investment in higher education, including a two per cent increase to domestic tuition.

The University of Windsor welcomes this news.

President J.J. McMurtry said the new measures represent a commitment to stabilizing Ontario's post-secondary sector and strengthening the province's future through talent and career development.

"We thank Premier Ford and Ministers Bethlenfalvy and Quinn for their leadership. We are grateful that the government has recognized that Ontario's universities need support," he said. "Increasing funding to the sector signals an understanding of the challenges facing universities."

President McMurtry said the government's announcement includes four priorities UWindsor advanced in its submission to the province: strengthened support for regional universities, differentiated funding for high-cost programs including nursing and engineering, new program funding and lifting the tuition freeze.

"We are encouraged that the government has listened to our concerns and we look forward to ongoing dialogue on the broader measures needed to continue to ensure a sustainable future for our students and our region," President McMurtry said.

"The University recognizes that ongoing efforts to improve efficiencies will still be required across campus."

As further details become available, we will keep our campus community informed.
