For the second year in a row, students and faculty in Cambrian College's School of Public Safety got a glimpse of how a stand-off situation in a jail setting might unfold.
They watched as the Sudbury Jail Crisis Negotiator and Institutional Crisis Intervention Team (ICIT) held a training exercise in Cambrian's Public Safety lab, which is equipped with working jail cells.
In the exercise, team members acting as inmates engaged in a stand-off with negotiators and the ICI Team, before being subdued. One inmate surrendered peacefully, while the others had to be subdued, using all the tools and tactics ICI team members would use in an actual situation.

"This was a great learning experience for both our students and our faculty, because the scenario was as realistic as possible, to give everyone a real sense of what to expect when they are working in a corrections setting," explains Leah Bouthillier, a faculty member and coordinator of Cambrian's Community and Justice Services program. "What's also great is that a team leader and another member of this year's ICIT are also graduates of our Police Foundations program, as well as a crisis negotiator is a graduate of the Protection, Security and Investigation Program, so it shows our current students what they can achieve in this field. The Sudbury Jail Crisis Manager on scene is also a faculty member for Community and Justice Services Program."
