From Sudbury to the national stage: Cambrian's Steve Gravel named one of Canada's top young mining leaders

The manager of Cambrian College's Centre for Smart Mining has won a national award for his contributions to the mining sector.

Steve Gravel has been named one of the 2026 recipients of the Bedford Group's Canadian Young Mining Leaders Award, presented by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM). The national award recognizes emerging leaders under the age of 40 who have demonstrated exceptional professional achievement and leadership in Canada's mining industry.

Gravel received the honour at CIM's annual convention this week.

"I can't imagine a more meaningful or rewarding honour than being recognized by CIM in this way," says Gravel. "It is humbling to know that leaders within an industry I care so deeply about see value in the contributions I've been fortunate to make so far."

The Centre for Smart Mining is part of Cambrian R&D, the college's applied research division. As Manager for the Centre for Smart Mining, Gravel plays a critical role in advancing innovation in the mining sector, working closely with industry partners to develop practical, technology-driven solutions that improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability in Northern Ontario and beyond.

"Congratulations to Steve for this well-earned recognition, as his work exemplifies the kind of industry-connected innovation that defines applied research at Cambrian," says Janneke Nicholls, Cambrian's Vice-President of Finance, Administration and Applied Research.
