December 9, 2024

The University of Guelph ranks second among Canadian comprehensive universities in an annual survey of top research institutions. This marks the 10th year in a row that the University has held this spot.

In the 2024 Research Infosource Inc. ranking of Canada's Top 50 Research Universities, U of G ranks second in the comprehensive category. Comprehensive universities offer a mix of undergraduate, graduate and professional programs and provide students with a wide-ranging education while supporting research and innovation activities.

The University ranks 17th overall among the institutions surveyed, climbing up one spot from last year's 18th place.

U of G also retained first place in the graduate student research intensity and faculty research intensity rankings among comprehensive universities with averages of $59,400 per graduate student and $224,600 per faculty member.

The total sponsored research income generated by U of G including grants, contributions and contracts was $186.2 million.

"It is wonderful to see the University of Guelph recognized so consistently as one of Canada's top research universities," says Dr. Shayan Sharif, interim vice-president (research and innovation). "These are long-standing achievements for U of G that highlight the excellence and dedication of our researchers and signify our reputation as a research partner of choice for collaborators worldwide."

The Infosource rankings are based on various measures including total sponsored research income, the number of publications in leading journals and research impact.

A division of The Impact Group, Research Infosource is an independent national consulting firm that tracks research activities of Canadian companies, universities and governments.
