For 50 Grade 11 and 12 students, today's (Sept 5) first day of school took place on the Algoma University campus in Brampton, thanks to an innovative new program designed to help students transition to university.
Algoma University (AU) and the Peel District School Board (PDSB) have teamed up to launch the Learners Early Access Program (LEAP). The program focuses on students who belong to groups traditionally underrepresented at universities.
"Having a university campus right here in Brampton can change people's lives," said Algoma University President and Vice-Chancellor, Asima Vezina. "We're giving Peel students an opportunity to find their passion and get credit for it from designing mobile apps to learning about the business of Esports. Most importantly, we're helping young people see they belong on a university campus. We know many of these students will be the first in their family to go to university and we know that the first is rarely the last."
The LEAP program allows students to take university courses for credit while still completing their high school classes on the Algoma University campus in a space dedicated to LEAP.
"Innovation in our education model is essential to ensuring students graduate with the global competencies and future readiness skills they need to succeed academically and in life outside of school," said Rashmi Swarup, Director of Education, Peel District School Board. "Through our partnership with Algoma University, the Learners Early Access Program is giving these students the tools and opportunities to develop critical skills in an elevated academic environment, while allowing them to explore future possibilities, both academically and professionally."
