CARLETON UNIVERSITY
New Carleton University Jaimie Anderson Scholarships Will Promote Civility in Politics

December 8, 2023

The Carleton University Clayton H. Riddell Graduate Program in Political Management (MPM) is delighted to announce the creation of a new scholarship program, designed to support the studies of graduate students who embrace politics with a spirit of civility.

The Jaimie Anderson Scholarships are being established in memory of Jaimie Anderson; a young political staffer whose passing inspired the creation of the Jaimie Anderson Internship Program more than a decade ago.

The commitment to the Carleton MPM program is for a total of $200,000, in the form of a five-year contribution of $40,000 per year. It is intended that Carleton will use these funds to provide $5,000 scholarships to eight deserving students each year.

"Carleton's Political Management program is a one of a kind in Canada. We want to help the program and its' students will play a constructive and thoughtful role in politics," says Bruce Anderson, on behalf of Jaimie's family. "While partisanship will always be a part of a healthy, competitive democratic system, so too is a spirit of mutual respect, and appreciation of conversing about politics in ways that reduce, rather than increase conflict."

"The program welcomes politically active students from across parties, and different walks of life, who come together in our program to gain the knowledge, skills, ethical framework and professional networks they need to make our politics a little bit better," says Jennifer Robson, associate professor and director of the Political Management program at Carleton. "That's something we all benefit from. We need good people working in and around politics. These awards will help to make sure that money isn't the obstacle that keeps good people out. We are grateful to the Anderson family for this expression of support for the work our program does."

Exceptional students who are admitted for full-time graduate studies in the program will be considered for these scholarships, starting with the 2024-25 academic year.
