UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA
President's Statement on the passing of Dr. Donald Beanlands

September 9, 2024

I was very saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Donald Beanlands who co-founded the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) with Dr. Wilbert J. Keon in 1976. Together, they had an incalculable impact on the lives of countless Canadians and other patients worldwide.

As the first head of cardiology at UOHI, Dr Beanlands was a true champion of excellence in cardiac care and led the phenomenal growth in clinical care and training at the Institute. His work led to the creation of some of the country's leading training programs for young cardiologists, fueled research in areas like telemedicine and cardiac transplants, and helped reduce mortality rates among heart attack patients.

The University of Ottawa has lost one of its great pioneers. On behalf of our entire University community, I wish to offer my deepest condolences to Dr. Beanlands' family, friends and colleagues.

Jacques Frémont, University of Ottawa President and Vice-Chancellor
