UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA
The Gaming Hub: uOttawa to open dedicated video game, E-sport research space

September 25, 2024
The University of Ottawa Library is opening a space dedicated to video games and E-sports that will provide students with a dedicated gaming space, and researchers with valuable data.

The pan-faculty project inside Morisset Library will serve the entire uOttawa student population by providing competitive and recreational video games in-person and virtually. The multi-purpose venue will:
  • Provide video games research through in-house projects and collaboration with research institutes.
  • Raise awareness and train students in healthy gaming practices, prepare for professional careers, educate on players' rights and more.
  • Involve students from the uOttawa esports club, the Game Dev club and Boards Games Club.

Low-cost innovation and sustainability shaped the new space, with Professor Thomas Burelli, Co-Chair in Pedagogical Innovation of the uOttawa Civil Law Section, aiming to secure investments from sponsors to make it financially self-sufficient by 2026.

"These three clubs represent several hundred students from our community and are planning to organize more than 50 events over the course of 2024-25. Over the past decade, the esports industry has started to overtake traditional sports in viewership and popularity and the industry is worth billions globally," explains Burelli of the Faculty of Law - Civil Section, who has previously created a video game about video game law.
