Police foundations students win top prizes at Peel Fit Challenge

Students from Conestoga's Police Foundations clinched top prizes in a fitness challenge for Ontario colleges with policing programs.

Conestoga placed third overall against seven other colleges in the Peel Fit Challenge hosted by Peel Regional Police on March 6. The colleges were invited to bring their top students - two women and two men - to compete against each other in physical activities at the annual event.

Conestoga's Ava Deutschmann placed second among the Women's Top 3, scoring 99 per cent. The competition was a great opportunity for students to showcase their skills to recruiters, as well as meet students in policing programs from other colleges, Deutschmann said.

"It was definitely a tough competition but we all ended up pushing ourselves and exceeding our personal expectations, which was great to see and I am proud of all of us."

Conestoga's Jamie Etter scored 95 per cent, Hassan Davut scored 93.5 per cent and Zachary Lewis scored 88.5 per cent. The Conestoga team was pleased to represent their program and perform so well.

"Placing third overall as a school and being the second-place female was a good accomplishment for us. We were very happy to be able to do that for Conestoga."

The organizers commended the Conestoga students for their outstanding performance.

"All four students represented Conestoga College well and should be very proud of their achievements. It was a pleasure having them in our facility," said Const. Danny Marttini, Uniform Recruiting Outreach Officer.

Conestoga's Police Foundations program is a two-year integrated learning experience that helps students develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values of a preferred candidate in public-sector law enforcement. The program focuses on understanding justice through a lens of social equity and modern policing and has been designed to provide an overall base for a variety of careers in criminal justice and public safety through a combination of theory and simulation-based experiences.

Conestoga's School of Community Services is a leader in translating students' passions for working with people and making a difference in community into successful careers in human services and community safety.
