Confederation College Recognizes Athletic Achievements

The Student Union of Confederation College Inc. (SUCCI) held its Annual Thunderhawks Athletic Awards on Tuesday, April 2nd, offering an opportunity to recognize the athletic and academic accomplishments of local athletes and coaches. 

Thunderhawks Women's Cross Country Running Athlete, Jamie Kovacic, was crowned Female Athlete of the Year for the 3rd year in a row.  Kovacic is graduating from the Practical Nursing program.  Jamie demonstrated her athletic spirit, enthusiasm, and dedication to athletics with her commitment to the Thunderhawks Cross Country Running program.  At the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association's (OCAA) Provincial Championships, Jamie's 2nd place performance qualified her to compete at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association's (CCAA) National Championships in Truro, NS, where she was the 2nd Ontarian to cross the finish line. Kovacic also received the Thunderhawks Cross Country Running Team MVP award and the OCAA Honour Award this year.

Thunderhawks Men's Cross Country Running Athlete, Tony Elikana received this year's Male Athlete of the Year award.  Elikana hails from Sudan and is new to this sport.  The OCAA Provincial Championship was Tony's first truly competitive race.  Crossing the finish line in 13th place, Elikana also earned a spot at the National Championships. 

Varsity Athletic and Sport Team MVPs were also awarded to the following athletes:

Griffen Wiersema - Men's Golf
Rosa Galle - Women's Indoor Soccer
Prem Bikram Khadka - Men's Indoor Soccer
Jamie Kovacic - Cross Country Running
Brayden Sinclair - Mixed Curling

Yug Dangol, graduating from the Computer Programming program, was this year's D.A.R. Bradshaw Athletic Achievement Award recipient.  This award is presented to a graduating student, who demonstrates the most improvement in and contribution to athletics, and whose quality of spirit and competitive drive contributed to the overall success of the College's athletic programs.  Captain of the Men's Indoor Soccer Team, Dangol demonstrated commitment, hard work, leadership, motivation, and team spirit that positively impacted the team.

OCAA Honour Awards were presented to Jamie Kovacic - 2023 OCAA Women's Cross Country Running 1st All-Ontario Team and Tony Elikana - 2023 OCAA Men's Cross Country Running 2nd All-Ontario Team.

OCAA (Ontario Colleges Athletic Association) All-Academic Awards (achieving honour roll status in the Fall semester) were presented to Quinn Dodds (XC Running), Tony Elikana (XC Running) and Griffen Wiersema (Men's Golf).
