Confederation College Paramedic Students Save Life While Training

Quick thinking and skilled action from Confederation College paramedic students turned a routine training day into a life-saving mission on Friday, November 29.

The students were practicing their skills in the lab when Program Coordinator Rob Plummer, who was outside setting up for their session, was approached by a driver seeking urgent help for an unconscious passenger. Recognizing the severity of the situation, Plummer quickly called 911, ran inside, called on the students, grabbed their equipment from the lab, and together they sprang into action together.

The passenger was determined to be suffering from an apparent drug overdose. Acting with professionalism and composure, the team extricated the individual from the vehicle and began administering first aid. Using their training, they identified the need for Narcan and successfully administered it, ultimately saving the victim's life.

"Incidents like this demonstrate the importance of real-world training and the incredible capabilities of our students," said Rob Plummer, Paramedic Program Coordinator. "Their response was swift, professional, and compassionate. I couldn't be more proud of their actions."

Reeghan Gernat, Emma Cahill, Amy Knott, Devin Richards, and Stephen Ree were the students involved in this life-saving effort.

Confederation College President Michelle Salo recently visited the students to commend them for their bravery and professionalism. "These students exemplify the best of what our program prepares them for helping those in need with expertise and care," said Salo. "Their actions are a testament to the high standards of our Paramedic Program and their commitment to serving Thunder Bay and the surrounding region."

Confederation College's Paramedic Program provides hands-on training to prepare students for the challenges of working in emergency medical services. With a focus on practical experience and community-based learning, graduates are equipped to make a difference from day one on the job.
