Metaboly Research Group's unique approach to diagnostic solutions and improved access to animal health data for horse owners is the latest example of a Trent student-led research project turning into a viable, successful one-of-a-kind business that addresses underserved and in-demand markets across the country.

As co-founders of Metaboly Research Group Inc., Daniel Palberg and William Kim, Ph.D. students in the Environmental and Life Sciences graduate program and active members of various clubs and boards across the University, are keen to improve access to health and wellness data for horse owners.

Thanks to their hard work, dedication, and the valuable partnerships they have made at Trent and in the community, the new MITACS grant worth $180,000 will help do just that. The funding also marks a significant achievement for Trent's research ecosystem, with the funds going directly into Trent research centres, and expanding experiential learning opportunities for other students.

"Trent is thrilled to see Metaboly receive this well-deserved MITACS Grant, which helps in furthering skilled workforce and research development at Trent and in the Peterborough region," said Dr. Cathy Bruce, vice-president of Research at Trent University. "Metaboly is the result of the creativity, hard work, and entrepreneurial spirit of its founders. It is just fabulous to see top Trent students like Daniel and Will taking the talent and skills they have developed, and in turn contribute to the talent and economic well-being of the bigger ecosystem."

Keeping Business Close to Home

"We have been fortunate to gain scientific knowledge in biochemistry, molecular biology, and analytical chemistry over nine years here at Trent University," says Kim, co-founder & COO of Metaboly. "During our time at Trent, we've been exposed to many research environments where our individual competencies have grown from working under leading experts on some of the most advanced technology and instrumentation in North America. With these skills in-hand, Trent's innovation-focused leadership enriched our experience from ideation to piloting a real research project - one of a kind in Canada."

Metaboly focuses on diagnostic solutions, data reporting, as well as targeted and user-driven tools and platforms for large animals, and more specifically, horses. With an overall goal of providing easier access to animal health and wellness data, the MITACS grant will propel their mission forward through various research avenues.

Metaboly is also enrolled in Innovation Cluster's LevelUP accelerator program, which has been providing them with business guidance, coaching, and mentorship throughout their growth, and facilitating valuable third-party partnerships that led to securing this grant.

With a focus on empowering students through their studies, research, transition into the workforce and beyond, Palberg and Kim's journey is emblematic of Trent's ongoing commitment to research advancement and student success.

"Our plan is to use the entire grant to fund research initiatives, including experiential learning opportunities for students in STEM programs," says Palberg, co-founder & CEO of Metaboly. "This grant will be key to accelerating our delivery of analytic services, and rapidly expanding our serviceable area to those in remote and resource-poor regions of the province. Much of this work will take place in the heart of the research world at Trent's Campus. It's a very rewarding feeling being a part of the Trent community outside of our studies."
